Coming home to an adorable pet happily wagging its tail, giving out wet kisses, and snuggling the minute they see you is pure joy. Being a fur parent is one of the best feelings in the world. The only downside is they can stink up your place so bad that it doesn’t go away no matter how much you clean.
If you struggle with getting rid of your puppy’s signature scent on your sofa, it’s time to deep clean. Check out these deep cleaning tips on how to get rid of pet odor and freshen up your home.
Vacuum every nook and cranny as often as possible
The vacuum cleaner is every pet owner’s best friend. You want to vacuum religiously and rigorously daily to manage your pet’s fur, hair, and dander. Focus on floors, rugs, carpets, and couches. Don’t forget to vacuum behind and under the furniture and the stairs. Even if your dog or cat doesn’t shed fur, regularly vacuuming is still a non-negotiable because you still have to deal with pet dander, the microscopic flecks of skin that come off them. In addition, we highly recommend getting your carpets and rugs steam cleaned professionally at least once a year.
Wash beddings and your pet’s accessories and toys daily
Your pup breathes and drools on everything. Oof, dog breath! So, as a rule of thumb, anything that comes in contact with your pet should be washed vigorously every day to minimize the risks of spreading odor-causing germs and bacteria.
- Wash your pet’s bed daily — where all the stink from pee, saliva, sweat, earwax, and other nasties comes from. If your pet’s bed isn’t machine washable, it’s time to get a new one.
- Aside from pet blankets, you should wash your beddings frequently, especially if you let them sleep or curl up on your bed. Wash them separately in the washing machine using a mild laundry detergent. Do this frequently, even if there are no messy “accidents.”
- On the other hand, don’t forget to wash their toys, leash, and feeding bowls daily with warm water and soap.
Take them to the groomers regularly
Aside from bathing them, schedule regular appointments with a professional pet grooming salon to prevent shedding, ticks, fleas, and other issues that stem from poor pet hygiene. They can do everything — cleaning your pet ears, brushing their teeth, and trimming their nails. More importantly, they know how to deal with your pet’s anal glands, which leak gross fluid with a pungent odor when full. Typically, anal glands get full and should be expressed at least once a month. Of course, your vet can also do this.
Sprinkle baking soda on surfaces to neutralize the pet odor
Baking soda is incredibly effective at neutralizing nasty pet odors. After cleaning or vacuuming:
- Sprinkle baking soda evenly on your pet beds, couches, and carpets.
- Leave it for a few minutes and then vacuum again. You’ll notice the funky smell is gone.
Before covering the whole area, do a patch test first to avoid permanently damaging anything.
Mop floors with water, vinegar, and detergent or dishwashing liquid
For smelly floors, vacuum and then mop with water and vinegar solution. Vinegar is an excellent, eco-friendly home cleaner that eliminates foul odors and removes stains.
